NEADS meets needs by providing special dogs for special people!

Crabapple Downs is proud to be involved in the NEADS Service Dog Program. Many of our poodles are currently enrolled in the program, where they are learning to serve the needs of disabled people.

NEADS is a non-profit organization that was established to provide hearing and service dogs to people who are deaf or use wheelchairs. These assistance dogs become an extension of their owners and bring security, freedom, independence and relief from social isolation to their human partners.

NEADS Graduation Class of October, 2000
Ramsey, Red/Apricot Standard Poodle (Top Step)
Angie, Blue Standard Poodle (Second Step Up)
Both went out to assist wheel chair users!

Since 1976, NEADS has trained over 500 dogs for service across the United States. Many of these dogs are rescued from shelters, while others, like our dogs, are donated by caring breeders who want to make a difference in the lives of handicapped people.

When a person who uses a wheelchair meets his service dog, a miracle happens! The NEADS service dog serves as the arms and legs for his human partner. These dogs pick up articles that are dropped, retrieve items from high shelves, push elevator buttons, pull wheelchairs and carry things in their backpacks.

How can you help?

  • NEADS needs puppy raisers to open their hearts and homes for one year and a half to care for a puppy before he is enrolled in the center.

  • NEADS needs veterinarians to donate their services for one puppy through it's important first year and a half of life.

  • NEADS needs breeders to donate puppies to be trained at the center for service.
